Have Mercy on Us All was Vargas’s first novel to be translated into English. It follows a murder investigation set in contemporary Paris against the background of the plague and a town crier. After residents of Paris beginning turning up dead and rumors abound that the plague has returned to the city, Commissaire Adamsberg decides to investigate to get to the bottom of the matter. Have Mercy on Us All is the third book by Vargas that focuses on Adamsberg and was published in 2001. It won the Prix des libraires and the Grand prix des lectrices de Elle in the following year.
About Fred Vargas
Fred Vargas is a French writer, historian and archeologist who is famous for her detective novels, many of which focus on Commissaire Adamsberg. Her novels have met with a great deal of success: she has won a range of literary prizes, both at home and abroad, and many of her works have been adapted for cinema and television. Vargas has also made a name for herself in the world of politics, as she is well-known as a defender of Cesare Battisti, a far-left terrorist who was hunted by the French and Italian authorities in 2004.
