About The Name of the Rose
The Name of the Rose is the Italian writer Umberto Eco’s first novel. It is set in an abbey in the early 14th century, and follows the main characters William of Baskerville and his assistant Adso of Melk as they try to solve a series of murders and get to the bottom of the many mysteries surrounding the abbey’s library.
The Name of the Rose has inspired film, theatrical, musical and video game adaptations, and was named one of the 100 Books of the Century by the French newspaper Le Monde.
About Umberto Eco
Umberto Eco was a prolific Italian novelist, essayist, philosopher and semiotician. His novels, which include The Name of the Rose, Foucault’s Pendulum and The Prague Cemetery, typically feature wide-ranging literary and historical references, and often deal with the themes of mystery and secrets. Eco also wrote many non-fiction works, in which he analysed subjects including literature, sculpture and the art of translation. He died in 2016, at the age of 84.
