About Address Unknown
Address Unknown is an epistolary novel which was first published in 1938. Through a series of letters exchanged between two friends, one a Jew living in America and the other a German, Taylor explores the rise of Nazism and the powerful effect of propaganda. As time goes on and Martin, the character living in Germany, becomes more and more influenced by Hitler’s radical, anti-Semitic ideas, it becomes extremely difficult for the two to maintain their friendship.
Address Unknown was very successful when it was first released, and it was quickly translated into a range of foreign languages. Taylor was inspired to write the story after the shocking things she heard from the mouths of former German friends. The Dutch translation was confiscated by the Nazis, while the German translation was successfully published, but in Moscow. Unsurprisingly, the book was banned in Germany itself.
