About Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre, a fictitious autobiography, was first published in 1847. It tells the story of Jane Eyre, a poor, unattractive orphan who attempts to find herself a place in society in spite of its general disregard for women. The novel was a revolution in literature, with Brontë being hailed as “the first historian of the private consciousness”.

Jane Eyre caused a certain amount of controversy when it was first published, due to its examination of sexuality, religion and the position of women in society. Nevertheless, it was extremely successful, and its popularity has lasted until modern times, with a great number of TV and cinema adaptions appearing in the 20^th and 21^st century.

About Charlotte Brontë

Charlotte Brontë is widely held to be one of the greatest English writers of the 19^th century. She was born into a rather unremarkable family and grew up with her brother and four sisters. She began to write poetry when she was only 13 years old and later went on to write more than 200 more. She and her sisters began to publish their poems under male pen names, given the patriarchal nature of society at the time. Although her first novel was initally rejected, she managed to publish Jane Eyre, which was a great success. She outlived all of her sisters and eventually died in 1855 at the age of 38, not long after she had got married.
