About Art
Art was first performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1994. It is a rather unusual comedy in which three good friends are divided over the purchase of an expensive piece of modern art. This then spirals into a debate of what “art” truly is.
Art has been translated into more than 30 languages and been staged all over the world. Among the numerous awards that it has won, the most impressive was the prestigious Tony Award, which it was awarded after it was produced by David Pugh and Sean Connery on Broadway.
About Yasmina Reza
Yasmina Reza is a French playwright and novelist of mixed parentage: she was born to a Russian-Iranian father and a Hungarian mother who had escaped to Paris in their flight from the Soviet Union. Although theater is her passion – she has written many award-winning plays – she is also the other of several novels, and she followed Nicholas Sarkozy during his campaign in 2007 to report on the election.
However, she is known most of all for her theater – she graduated with a degree in sociology and theatrical studies and wrote her first play, Conversations After a Burial, shortly afterwards. Her fame then increased dramatically with the first performance of Art in 1994, and she is now the most performed contemporary French playwright in the world.
