About The Gold-Bug
The Gold-Bug is a short story written by American writer Edgar Allan Poe which was first published in 1843. Told in the style of a classic adventure tale, it follows a group of companions as they embark on what appears at first to be a wild goose chase, but which the protagonist eventually reveals to be a search for Captain Kidd’s fabled buried treasure. Although Poe is better known for his more macabre tales today, The Gold-Bug was the most widely-read of his tales during his own lifetime, and greatly popularised the notions of encrypted messages and buried treasure in the public imagination.
