About The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is set at the height of the Cold War, when tensions between the West and East were at their peak and the threat of nuclear war loomed large. Against this backdrop, the veteran intelligence agent Alec Leamas is sent on a secretive new mission to pretend to defect to Communist East Germany, with the ultimate aim of removing the head of the country’s secret services. However, he soon finds himself caught in a web of deceit and betrayal, with consequences he could never have imagined…
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is among le Carré’s most influential works: it quickly became an international bestseller, and in 2005, the 50th anniversary of the Crime Writers’ Association Golden Dagger Awards, it received the “Dagger of Daggers” as the most significant of all the novels that have received the award.
