About The Hate U Give
The Hate U Give tells the story of 16-year-old Starr Carter, whose life is turned upside-down when she witnesses an incident of police brutality: her unarmed friend Khalil is shot dead in front of her. Starr initially tries to conceal the fact that she was present, but as tensions soar in her neighborhood and the media churns out lie after lie about the shooting, she feels increasingly torn between the urge to keep her head down and the conviction that Khalil’s murderer needs to be brought to justice.
The Hate U Give topped the New York Times bestseller list the week it was released, and remained on the list for 50 weeks. A film adaptation starring Amandla Stenberg was released the following year.
