About Jude the Obscure
Jude the Obscure tells the story of the title character, a poor stonemason who dreams of becoming an educated man and attending university. However, his ambitions are ultimately frustrated, as are his dreams of happiness with the woman he loves, as their relationship is condemned by those around them.
The novel met with generally negative reviews when it was first published, with at least one reviewer dubbing it “Jude the Obscene” due to its sexual content and rejection of Victorian moral values; however, this early reception did not hinder its later popularity, and it is still widely read and studied today.
About Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy was an English writer who was initially best known for his novels, including Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) and Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891), although he generally preferred the medium of poetry and also garnered acclaim for the poems he published later in life. Hardy frequently explored the theme of rural life and its challenges in his work, and was a vocal critic of many aspects of Victorian society. His work is generally categorized within the currents of Realism and Romanticism. He died in 1928 aged 87.
