About Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is Gail Honeyman’s debut novel. It follows the title character, who, despite her attempts to pretend otherwise, is far from “completely fine”: she is socially isolated, drinks heavily to block out memories of her traumatic childhood, and is still influenced by her abusive mother. However, a chance event unexpectedly pulls her out of her isolation, and she gradually begins to open up to the world and face up to her past.
The novel was both a popular and a critical success, winning the 2017 Costa Debut Novel Award, as well as the “Debut Book of the Year” award and the “Overall Winner” award (chosen by public vote) in the 2018 British Book Awards.
