About Pnin
Pnin tells the story of Professor Timofey Pnin, who teaches sparsely-attended classes in Russian language and literature at the fictional Waindell College in the USA. He fled his native Russia after the Revolution in 1917, before leaving Europe altogether because of what he refers to as the “Hitler war”. In his adopted country, he grapples with an unfamiliar marriage and bewilderment or outright hostility of his colleagues, as well as the reappearance of his ex-wife, who is now the mother of a precociously talented teenager. Through Pnin’s constant misadventures, Nabokov brilliantly explores the themes of memory, exile and the way that language can foster both cohesion and exclusion.
About Vladimir Nabokov
Vladimir Nabokov was a Russian-American novelist. Although he was born in Russia, during the Revolution he was forced to flee to Europe, where he studied literature, wrote his first books and gained recognition as a Russian-speaking author. He later moved to the USA, and became an American citizen in 1945. He began to write in English, which brought him a new audience and increased his renown. His fame exploded on a global scale with the publication of Lolita, his best-known novel, and he is now considered to be one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
