About Gulliver’s Travels
Gulliver’s Travels was initially published anonymously under the title Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, and purports to be a genuine account of one man’s journeys to remote corners of the globe. Lemuel Gulliver travels first to Liliput, whose inhabitants are just six inches tall, then to Brobdingnag, which is home to a race of giants, on to Laputa, a society made up of thinkers whose endless experiments are ultimately useless, and finally to the land of the Houyhnhnms, where human-like creatures are dismissed as stupid and bestial. The resulting narrative is both a highly entertaining parody of the travel writing genre and a biting satire of humanity’s behaviors and institutions that has lost none of its power to amuse and inspire thought.
About Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish author and clergyman. He was born in 1667 to English-born parents, but his father died before he was born, forcing his mother to rely on her family members for help. He went on to study at Trinity College, Dublin and work for a British diplomat; it was at this time that he began writing poetry. Nowadays he is remembered for his brilliant satirical writing, particularly his novel Gulliver’s Travels and his essay A Modest Proposal.
