About Tender is the Night
Tender is the Night is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final completed novel. It follows the charming psychiatrist Dick Diver and his beautiful wife Nicole, a glamorous American couple who are currently living in Europe. While staying on the French Riviera, they meet the teenaged actress Rosemary Hoyt, who is soon drawn into their orbit and becomes irresistibly attracted to Dick. As the novel progresses, the strain on Dick and Nicole’s marriage becomes increasingly apparent, and the rift between them only deepens when Dick embarks on an affair with Rosemary and becomes increasingly dependent on alcohol.
Fitzgerald considered Tender is the Night to be his best work, and it was ranked 28th on the Modern Library’s list of the 100 best English-language novels published in the 20th century.
About F. Scott Fitzgerald
F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the most influential American authors of the 20th century, and was part of the “Lost Generation”, a group of writers who rose to prominence in the wake of the First World War and also notably included Ernest Hemingway. Fitzgerald only published a handful of novels and achieved limited success during his lifetime, but his work is now considered to be an exemplary illustration of life in North America during the Jazz Age.
