About Against Nature
Against Nature follows the protagonist Duc Jean Floressas des Esseintes, the last descendant of an old aristocratic family that has been weakened by generations of consanguineous marriages. He is disgusted by what he sees as the materialism and mediocrity of the society around him and seeks refuge in art and literature, but his attempts to withdraw from the world result in the calamitous decline of his physical and mental health.
In spite of its unusual form (the novel has no plot as such, and is structured by the wanderings of des Esseintes’ mind rather than by specific episodes), the novel was well received when it was first published and is now recognized as one of the most important works of the 19th century.
About Joris-Karl Huysmans
Joris-Karl Huysmans, born in 1848, was a French writer. He was originally involved with Naturalism, but eventually drifted away from it and from Émile Zola, the leader of the movement. He broke away from Zola completely in 1884, the year his most famous novel, À rebours (commonly translated into English as Against the Grain or Against Nature) was published. He was later associated with the Decadent Movement. A number of his works are autobiographical in nature and follow the evolution of characters who closely resemble him.
