About Beauty and the Beast
The classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast has captivated generations of readers since it first appeared in written form in the 18th century. In the tale, an impoverished merchant is caught by a hideous monster as he picks roses in the garden of his opulent palace. The terrifying creature only spares the merchant’s life when he agrees to bring one of his daughters to the palace. This girl is as virtuous as she is beautiful, and manages to see beyond the Beast’s repulsive appearance to his inner goodness. In doing so, she lifts the curse placed on him by a wicked fairy and reveals the handsome prince he really is.
Beauty and the Beast has inspired a host of adaptations over the centuries, including a Disney animated version in 1991 and a live action film in 2017.
